Alphabet

The Louisiana Creole alphabet has many of the same letters as the English alphabet (with exception of "c", "q" and "x") but they are pronounced differently. There are three additonal special letters called a e ligature (Æ), o e ligature (Œ) and circumflex (Ç) along with many accents over the 5 vowles in the language. Listen to the entire alphabet by clicking on the video icon above (please note that the sound file is 18.1 mb) or click on the individual letter to hear it pronounced.

Alt Codes, what are they and why do I want to know?

On a PC (this does not include Mac’s) there are many characters which are not available via a keystroke. Meaning there is no physical key on the keypad representing a specific character, for example ç as in circumflex or an æ as ina e ligature. In order to produce these characters, a method using the Alt code is available.

By pressing and holding the Alt key while typing a specific number, users are able to produce special characters when typing. Below you will find instructions, examples and a matrix of the special characters used in the Louisiana Creole Language. Bonchans! .

  • Make sure that you switch on the Number Lock on your keyboard (only it your are using 10 key).
  • Hold down the ALT key.
  • Type the number of the alt code you want to use.

Example 1

For example the alt code for ç (cedilla) is 135
Press and hold the ALT key and type 135

Example 2

Second example, the alt code for capatal Æ (a e ligature is 146)
Press and hold the ALT key and type 146

Alt Codes for apple devices

Tip #1: If you want to type special characters with accent marks (like the letters à or è), simply tap and hold the corresponding alphabet key for a while and it will pop-up a list of related accented characters for you to choose from. Don’t release the key before making a selection else the choices will disappear.
